Quartzite is a natural stone, harder than marble and more resistant to heat and scratching; like any natural stone, it should be sealed. An Oak Park kitchen, in Cook County.

Blue Roma is a quartzite quarried in Brazil. The base is a pale, smoky blue-gray, crossed by gold and rust veins that break the surface into large irregular shapes, so no two slabs look alike. At about 7 on the hardness scale, quartzite is harder than glass; marble sits around 3 to 4.

Blue Roma quartzite: what to know

Quartzite is a natural stone: sandstone that heat and pressure turned into one of the hardest surfaces we fabricate. It carries the soft veining people love in marble but takes heat, knives and daily use far better, and true quartzite is not etched by lemon, wine or vinegar. It is sealed at install with a penetrating sealer, and every slab is different, which is why the slab is chosen before it is cut.

In a kitchen, quartzite gives the marble look with far more resistance to daily wear. Seal it, wipe spills as a habit, and check it once a year with a few drops of water.

Common questions
Is quartzite the same as quartz?

No. Quartzite is a natural stone cut from the quarry, sealed, and different in every slab. Quartz is engineered from ground quartz and resin, never needs sealing, and is consistent slab to slab.

How do I know when quartzite needs resealing?

Leave a few drops of water on the surface for 10 to 15 minutes. If the water beads, the sealer is working. If the stone darkens, it is time to reseal. For most kitchens that is about once a year.
