The most dramatic white marble there is — thick, confident veining on a bright ground. The stone people fall in love with, fabricated the way it deserves.
All marble →Calacatta is a clean white field carrying bold, deliberate veins of grey, gold, or — in Calacatta Viola — plum and rust. It is quarried in Italy in limited quantity, and no two slabs repeat. That rarity is the point, and it's also why layout matters so much.
Calacatta marble comes from the Carrara area of Tuscany, in Italy's Apuan Alps. Compared with Carrara, it has a whiter ground and bolder, thicker veining, and today the name covers a whole family of marbles, from Calacatta Gold to Calacatta Viola and Calacatta Verde Blue.
Like any marble, it is softer than quartzite or granite. Lemon, wine and vinegar can etch the surface, and it develops a patina with use. Sealing protects it from stains but not from etching. A honed finish hides wear better; a polished finish shows the veining most clearly.
Because the veining is the point, layout matters: bookmatched backsplashes, veining that continues over a mitered edge, and seams placed where they disappear.
Carrara has a soft grey ground with fine, feathery veining. Calacatta is whiter, with bolder and thicker veining.
Yes. Acids like lemon, wine and vinegar can leave dull marks, especially on a polished finish. Honed hides etching better.
It can be, if you are comfortable with a surface that ages. If you want it to look the same in ten years, consider a quartzite or a Calacatta-look quartz or porcelain.
