White Carrara marble powder room in Lakeview, Chicago.

White Carrara on a powder room vanity. The stone kept restrained — clean counter, small backsplash — against gold legs and a dark wall.

A bathroom is where marble is easiest to live with: it sees far less acid and wear than a kitchen counter. Like all marble, it should be sealed. A Lakeview home, on Chicago's North Side.

White Carrara has been quarried in Italy's Apuan Alps since Roman times. It has a white to gray-white base with soft, feathery gray veins, and at 3 to 4 on the hardness scale it etches from acids, which makes a powder room vanity an easy place for it.

White Carrara marble: what to know

Marble has been the reference stone for centuries, and the reason is the veining: no two slabs read alike. It is a softer stone than granite or quartzite, so acids can etch the surface and the finish softens over the years. It is sealed at install against stains. A honed finish hides wear better; a polished finish shows the veining most clearly.

A bath is one of the best places for marble: less acid and less wear than a kitchen, so the veining stays the focus.

Common questions
Should marble be honed or polished?

Honed is a soft matte that hides etching and small marks better. Polished shows the veining most vividly but shows wear sooner. For busy kitchens, honed is usually the easier choice.

What is the difference between Calacatta and Carrara?

Carrara has a soft grey background with fine, feathery veining. Calacatta is whiter, with bolder, thicker veining, and the name covers a whole family of marbles.
