Calacatta Monet on a fireplace surround. The slab chosen for its painterly veining — grey-green and warm gold across a soft white field.

Taj Mahal on the island, perimeter, full-height backsplash, and the range hood — all clad in the same stone. The slabs walked at the warehouse so the veining flows across every surface.

Calacatta Viola porcelain on a wine cellar island. Built as a block with mitered waterfalls on every side — the violet veining flowing around the form without break.

Stone in Hinsdale homes.
Taj Mahal quartzite kitchen: island, perimeter, full-height backsplash and a stone-clad range hood, with a 3cm square edge. Taj Mahal comes in three finishes, and the finish changes the surface, not the stone. Polished shows the veining at its sharpest but shows fingerprints. Honed is a soft matte. Leathered hides fingerprints best. Taj Mahal can be a little more absorbent than denser quartzites, so check it with the water test sooner. More in the Journal.
Calacatta Monet marble fireplace, with the mantel from the same piece. Marble is at its best where it will be seen and not abused, and a fireplace surround is one of those places.
Calacatta Viola porcelain wine cellar island, mitered on every corner. Porcelain is non-porous, so spilled wine wipes off instead of soaking in. It is hard but brittle, which is why the edge work matters more than with any other material.
